Last year at the end of August, one of the girls who had just started coming to our Hudson Valley Modern Quilt Guild meetings asked if I would be willing to machine quilt a piece to be raffled off to benefit a group that she volunteers for called Friends Helping Friends. It is a group that is based here in the Hudson Valley that holds an event in September to raise money for people fighting cancer. All the money stays in our community, essentially helping our neighbors. At the time there was no Under the Rainbow Quilting or Statler Stitcher on my longarm. I had been thinking hard about taking the next step, but hadn't quite gotten there yet. To make a long story short, I ended up doing a big meander on that quilt and it went on to raise several hundred dollars for the group, and it was the beginning of my friendship with Jody. It was also the spark that got me moving on starting Under the Rainbow.
Fast forward to this year when this quilt 'Synergy', became the raffle quilt for this year's event.
Jody meticulously paper pieced all those blocks and then bordered it with this beautiful cone flower fabric. You can read about it on her blog www.thevanillayear.com. She chose chain maille for the quilting pattern, which I have now done on several quilts and I love every one. There were so many beautiful colors in the quilt it was hard to pick one for the thread. In the end, the pale lavender won out over the others.
The pieced back is almost as beautiful as the front.
This next quilt was a little project I have been working on over the summer. At my "other" job, our tech Aimee graduated from nursing school and took a job as a nurse, so we are losing her. She is always smiling and laughing and eager to help in any way. I wanted to make her a quilt to snuggle with after long days on orientation. This quilt is like her, bright and happy.
It was quilted with a pattern called "Splat".
She liked it!
My furry best friend turned 5 last week. It is her made up birthday because the shelter we got her from didn't have any information about her beginnings. She had her birthday burger, much to her delight!
Hope everyone is having a good week. What are you working on? Fall projects? Christmas gifts? It's not too early to plan ahead!
